Travels with Hayley

Hi everyone and welcome to Cambodia! After an epic 22 hours straight of travelling I’ve finally arrived in Phnoh Penh.

Trip started well as I got moved from my terrible seat to an empty row of 2 on the plane so could stretch out a bit and get some sleep. Chicken curry, rice and a brownie were served as soon as we were airborne and then lights off for 8 hours of rest! Awoken again for a terrible looking ‘international’ breakfast of omelette (why do they do this on planes, literally nothing reheats worse than eggs?!) sausage and vegetables – I did not partake although I did squeeze in the mini croissant and strawberry jam – just to keep my strength up you understand.

2 hour layover at Bangkok airport where I had a wander around the shops and leapt upon some jackfruit to snack on, then had a great chat with a group of Australians who had been travelling around SE Asia for a month. I gave them the blog address so Sam & co, if you’re reading, g’day!

Half a dozen monks were on the 1 hour hop from Bangkok to Phnom Penh, I was very taken with the pink suitcase that one of them had chosen and even more so with the one that had gone to the sartorial effort of matching his mask to his robe – very impressive! Oddly, one of them was barefoot but the rest were wearing sandals – which made me wonder if it was God that we presumed had an objection to shoes and the others were cheating, or if it was just a predilection of this particular chap!

Jumped in a cab at the airport for the half hour ride to the hotel – even in the dark there was so much to see out of the window, people gathered on every corner eating street food from the cart vendors, mopeds with multiple people clinging on, tuk tuks streaming along the roads in their hundreds, skyscrapers, run down buildings and memorably a guy clearing his shop front for the night and carrying in a rack of around 30 Mrs Santa outfits!

Checked into the hotel fine, it seems very nice and somewhat fancier than I’m used to – there are robes! And a free toothbrush! Living in the lap of luxury 😂

Shower and sleep and let’s see what tomorrow brings 😍
